Integrating social and natural science to improve pollination outreach and education for farmers
Kourtney Collum, University of Maine, Orono ME
Faculty advisor: Samuel Hanes
With pollinator health concerns growing, native bees should be part of any pollinator management plan, but there is an information and implementation gap among farmers. The student will offer free hands-on workshops that focus on native bee conservation in apples, blueberries, and mixed vegetables, with pre- and post-workshop surveys that will identify barriers to adoption. Results will be used in an internal report, outreach materials for farmers, a peer-reviewed article, and at workshops and events, with the long-term goal of improving education and outreach to farmers so that native bee conservation becomes a standard practice.
